Amy’s journey to her debut album, Let the Holy Roar, was unexpected and unconventional in every way. It is marked with the fingerprints of a caring compassionate Father, who never quit pursuing her. Anyone who has walked through the wilderness of rejection or found themselves overwhelmed with waves of doubt will relate to her story. Raw and emotional, “Jesu Juva” and “Near the Cross” provide a soundtrack for these seasons. After spending her 20’s running from God, fueled by disenchantment with the church, she caught a glimpse of the true nature of her Father through the birth of her son. In that moment everything else faded away and she discovered every fault she had ascribed to His nature could not have been further from the truth. We hear her return to worship in songs such as “In the Waiting” and “Psalm 18.” While Amy spent many years studying classical music, she eventually found her home leading worship. Grateful to be able to sing in the local church, she believed the days of recording and songwriting were behind her, swallowed by the wake of rebellion in her youth. But God had other plans. With a severe mercy He interrupted her life in 2021 and set her on a course He designed before she took her first breath. Bookending her album, the anthems “Holy Roar” and “My Hope,” remind us that regardless of what this broken world brings to bear in our lives, we have a future and an inheritance that eclipses any heartbreak. Amy is thrilled to have the opportunity to share her story and original songs with other wounded worshippers in a way that leaves no question as to the goodness of God.

Life is hard.  Sometimes it is easy to get overwhelmed with the weight of our circumstances.  In my own life,  I sometimes struggle to make sense of the suffering my family has endured. I’m so thankful for the reminders of God’s faithfulness and sovereignty woven throughout Amy Hillis’ music. I often find myself repeating the truths I’ve heard in her songs over and over in my head throughout the day. The words bring great comfort and hope and they always point me straight to my gracious and merciful Savior.

It is no small feat to make sense of a beautiful Gospel when our only lens is one of brokenness and shame. Amy Hillis interprets this strange juxtaposition with ease. She expertly weaves together both the rawness and redemption, both the purpose and pain inherent in each of our unique journeys. As both a friend and a fellow pilgrim, I thought I knew well the contours of her heart; but my goodness, Amy is among that rare breed of performers that courageously plumbs the depths of their own experience for the sake of their audience. Amy’s words water parched areas of my soul I had honestly given up on. Her music and stories leave me with the sense of being truly seen, and with the renewed hope that I will see God’s goodness in the land of the living.

Stories. I love them. We all have them. One of the gifts we give is sharing them with one another. Some are better at telling them than others. Stories have always impacted. Hearts. Individuals. Communities. Cultures. Stories start movements. Movements create change. Amy has the gift of sharing through song. But what is powerful is not just her talent, her ability, how the words she has written tell her story, but how they resonate with our own. It leaves us reflecting on how the Lord has met us along our own journey. It creates a desire within us to turn our own pain into praise. It reiterates the faithfulness of our God. It leads us to meet him in Amy’s hallelujahs and in our own.
